HUDA was honored to be invited to present at the Pan-African Conference on Human Rights and Social Justice, where we contributed to critical discussions on the role of African communities in protecting human rights in counter-terrorism efforts. The conference brought together peacebuilding actors from over 20 African countries, including representatives from governments, international organizations, and civil society. The goal was to advocate for human rights-centered approaches to counter-terrorism—ensuring that security measures do not come at the expense of fundamental freedoms.
Key Highlights from the Conference
- The two-day event was officially opened by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights, alongside a distinguished delegation from the African Union, Hon. Raila Odinga, and other African dignitaries and human rights veterans.
- Discussions focused on developing strategies that safeguard human rights while addressing security threats, ensuring that counter-terrorism efforts remain just, ethical, and community-driven.
- HUDA’s presentation emphasized the power of grassroots communities in preventing radicalization, promoting peace, and protecting vulnerable populations from human rights violations in the fight against terrorism.
